Subject: CCCCs RoundTable (and more) on Basic Writing
To: WPA-L at asu.edu
I have to admit, I think the We are 113! alternative panel I cooked up went
well at CCCCs this year. I’m hoping to propose another crazy something for
next year and I would like to see if others maybe interested. Specifically,
I’m hoping to put together a combined two-year college and basic writing
round table that will “start” asynchronously in CCCC and/or TYCA Connected
Community areas and go “live” synchronously at CCCCs next spring. Please see
my outline below for more details. I’m looking for some volunteers
interested in facilitating discussion online and at the conference,
preferably two-year faculty; however, I’m open to working with anyone who
likes this content and/or “presentation” idea.
If you are interested in participating, please contact me individually:

There’s Nothing Basic about Basic Writing
Round Table
As the number of students placed into basic writing courses grow, especially
in the two-year colleges, the issues surrounding the teaching of basic
writing become increasingly complex. The purpose of this CCCCs round table
is to function as a synchronous meeting for a dialogue about the various
issues related to basic writing. The dialogue will asynchronously initiate
in NCTE’s/CCCC’s Connected Community, continue at CCCCs, and then continue
further in the online environment. We would like to make the synchronous
meeting both face-to-face at CCCCs as well as online by having 5-6 laptops,
with internet connections, available during the session so that active
online participants who could not make it to the conference could still
participate.
The purpose of the dialogue is to engage as many people as possible in a
discussion about these issues. We hope that in these discussions individuals
will share resources, best practices as well as develop a larger community
that might support members as they deal with local issues.
