[CBW_Exec] FW: Wednesday workshop question

Liz,

Sorry to be so slow in responding. My school's email system has been down for the past day and a half, so now I'm trying to get caught up.

I, too, find all this energized discussion very invigorating, and I thank you and our EB colleagues for trying to find just the right balance of offerings. The suggestion of an all-day CBW workshop with ALP included for a couple of hours would be fine with us. Including Bruce Horner will be great. And we ALP folks will be happy to make parts of our presentation more interactive.

Our original idea for a workshop was focused on issues involved in starting up an ALP program at schools who were considering such a course of action. That doesn't seem a good fit as part of your workshop, so what we'll do is an overview of ALP and reports on several studies we have conducted investigating how well the program works and why.

I haven't seen much discussion--although it may be in some email limbo where messages go when the server is down--of the featured session during the conference. At one time my name was mentioned as part of a panel to include, possibly, David Bartholomae, Lynn Troyka, Bruce Horner, and Mike Rose. Somehow my name seems a little out of place in such an illustrious group, and it would perhaps be piggish of me to ask to be included in the workshop and the featured session.

With that in mind, I suggest we go to work on contacting the others on the above list and inviting them to present on the featured panel. I think they'll do fine without me.

Liz, I like this structure very much. We have a broad theory+history
framework from Bruce Horner, then the excellent practices of ALP from
Peter Adams, and then our open-call invitation to new voices in BW. I
think this will be a very stimulating and productive workshop.

The one detail that came up in the EB meeting is that several
individuals thought we had, possibly, too many voices, without enough
time for reflection and discussion, in the open-call conference section,
so we may want to adjust the length of the talks and the q+a in that
last segment. Once we've got that settled, we can go to the whole list.

Happy Monday...

Bill

Hi Everyone,

I am so excited by all of this conversation & these ideas! I think we
are all still basking in the glow of the energy from CCCC.

I know that we had very definite ideas about the pre-conference session
at the EB meeting. What if we shift that to put all of this together:

The theme of the conference is "gateways"

What if we focused our preconference session on Basic Writing as an
essential gateway to college:

1. Bruce Horner, who Hannah and I invited to speak, would like to join
us if the timing works out. So:

1. Welcome
2. Opening Remarks on the year (updates, what we've done, maybe mission
statement, etc.)
3. Bruce Horner, framing issues in Basic Writing
4. Extended ALP panel (2 hours? 3 hours?) feature ALP as one
contemporary iteration of Basic Writing that provides a gateway.
LUNCH BREAK
5. Open panels by our open call (2 hours)
6. Smaller working group session (1 hour or so on
CBW/Mission/Charter/etc.)

That gives us 3 featured speaker slots: Bruce, ALP, and the open call
panelists plus some working time.

It's different from what we were planning. What do you think?

I don't want to take away from either ALP or CBW.

Thoughts?

Hi, all,

I may have missed some of this conversation--that time of the
semester--but I tend to agree with Kathleen and others who've noted
that, somehow, a half-day workshop does not seem as "important" as a
full-day workshop, and I think that's true from the Cs' perspective as
well as those attending the workshop.

I also wonder if CBW did a half-day and Peter's group did a half day, if
they might end up competing with one another, as none of us has control
over morning or afternoon scheduling?

I also wonder if Peter's workshop could somehow be folded-into the CBW
workshop, as a special feature for the all-day workshop?

thanks,

gg

So here's how this idea got started. The folks here and at several
other schools offering ALP wanted to propose a pre-conference workshop
on ALP. I wrote the co-chairs of CBW to ask whether having a second
one-day workshop on bw would be seen as a sign of the health of bw at
CCCC or might it, in fact, threaten that health by having two workshops
competing for the same attendees.

I offered that if competing for the same attendees seemed like a bad
idea, we could postpone our workshop for a year. Liz suggested that two
half-day workshops might be the best compromise, but thought we should
ask the EB. So we are.

Thank you for the discussion on this issue. I would hate to see CBW go
to a half
day. This full- day preconference is the ONE chance that many folks
involved in
BW get to participate in the scholarship of our field. If we try to get
it all
in three hours, we just don't have the impact that a full day makes
possible.
The workshop sets up the conference for the 20-50 people who are able to
attend.

I also think that cutting it to a half day lessens the impact of the
Sense of
the House Motion. If we don't believe that BW warrants a full day, why
should it
be considered for featured sessions or its own strand?

Think of how many ideas we suggested for the precon. We basically had to
narrow
it to only two, and then choose from those. If we cut that time in half,
we are
necessitating the removal of half the content. And part of the draw is
the
workshop format, which is possible in part because of the length of time
we have.

ALP is a proven program, it will continue to have positive effects where
it is
implemented, and it should be one of the ideas supported by CBW. I think
it was
even part of the precon a couple of years ago. I just don't think we
should
halve what we offer for it or any other program, no matter how
promising.

While I see alternative points, I suggest that we continue with the
planned
full-day preconference. kb
