Subject: FW: Wednesday workshop question
So, Exec Board--
What do you think about the idea of doing a half-day Wednesday workshop from CBW in the morning, and requesting that it not compete with ALP which could do a workshop in the afternoon? Not that they'd be proposed as part of same workshop, but but explicitly asking they not conflict and acknowleding similar draws?
Feedback?

If that's okay with you two, it would be great for us. I do think it would be good to run it past the EB.

Yes, perhaps we should propose a half day each, if folks think a good idea. Send to EB?

I was part of a generation of kids who saw something special about what it means to be human--something bloody and dramatic and scandalous that happened right here in America--and hip-hop was our way of reporting that story, telling it to ourselves and to the world...the story of the hustler was the story hip-hop was born to tell...hustling is the ultimate metaphor for the basic human struggles: the struggle to survive and resist...to win and make sense of it all. --from Jay-Z, Decoded (2010)

Liz makes an interesting suggestion. If we each did a half day workshop, we would be offering to basic writing workshops without competing for audience. A different way to compromise would be for us simply to postpone our idea a year, which we'd certainly be willing to do. Or, we could take the risk of offering both and letting those proverbial "chips" fall.
Would you like to see what the EB says about the question?

I agree, Peter, that if you feel like there is enough energy to do a workshop just devoted to ALP--do it and let the chips fall where they may.

Hi Peter,
Hope you're well. I think it's definitely important for you to have an
audience for ALP at CCCC. Is there someway we might join forces? For
example, if you did an ALP workshop from 9-12 and then joined us from
1-4? Or, would that make your day too short? Just brainstorming here.

Hannah and Liz,
As you know, at CCBC we have developed an accelerated approach to basic
writing we call ALP, which has met with considerable success in
improving students' success rates. More than twenty schools across the
nation are now piloting some sections of ALP and many more are
interested.
My colleagues and I have been thinking about proposing a pre-conference
workshop at CCCC on starting up ALP but we are worried about the effect
that might have on the CBW workshop. On the one hand, it might be a
sign of the healthiness of basic writing if there were two workshops,
both on basic writing. In the other hand, we might end up splitting the
audience and ending up with 15 or 20 at each session.
So I thought I'd ask what you think. Would you view our offering such a
workshop as a sign of the health of the field or as a competition that
is unhealthy for both of us?
