Hi Mike,
I think you, Shannon, and I are a go for the press release, but I wouldlike to hear from some others. If we don't hear from folks tonight, please send IHE the statement and a quick narrative.
If we do hear from a few other folks tonight, then please feel free tosend the press release.
We're just in new waters here & I'm not sure how everyone will feelabout this.
Liz

Apparently they still have a copy editoron the grounds and will be sending her to the meeting tomorrow morning. She asked for background info. Because there has been no response yetto Liz's press release, I'll just write up a little narrative about whatthe resolution is and how active we have been in the past couple ofdays. If I see that anyone (esp. Bill and/or Shannon) have respondedand given their approval to the press release before I send my emailtonight, I'll send the press release along instead. If not, I'll justsend the resolution and a little narrative. All the best,Mike

Mike Hill suggested that we have a press release prepared because InsideHigher Ed is coming to the meeting tomorrow. I'm far afield here, but Icopied the format for a press release. Rebecca, I used your statement asthe "significant quote." Thoughts?
How do you feel about this? Is this too much, or do we want to run withit?
Since I won't be there, I put Bill and Shannon as the contacts. What doyou think? I am including the EXEC board and Mike on this discussion.

For Immediate Release:
The Council on Basic Writing, an open community of teacherscholars inthe field of Basic Writing, calls for a recommitment to the centralroleof basic writing in the composition community.
Atlanta, Georgia, 9 April 2011: Although many luminaries inthe field ofcomposition studies trace their roots to teaching and writingabout BasicWriting, Basic Writing has become increasingly marginalized withintheCCCC community and in the field of composition studies. Virtuallyinvisibleat the national CCCC convention, Basic Writing is gone as astrand, as afeatured session, and even as a central word in conferencesession titles. That point was driven home in the 2011 Chair's address, asprinted in theprogram that "the fields that make up CCCC--composition,rhetoric,creative writing, language/linguistics, visual and digitalrhetorics, professional writing and communication--are diverse."In response to the absence of Basic Writing at CCCC, Rebecca Mlynarczyk,Co-editor, Journal of Basic Writing said, "Basic Writing is an importantsub-set of composition studies with a significant student population andwith a long and distinguished history and scholarship. We feel it isimportant that Basic Writing be acknowledged explicitly by CCC in a timeof waning public support for this important endeavor."To help to encourage CCCC to provide support for basicwriting facultyand students, and to recommit to the central role Basic Writinghas inthe field of composition, we are introducing the following sense ofthehouse resolution at the business meeting tomorrow morning. "Be itresolvedthat Basic Writing, a vital field and its students and teacherscholars aproductive force within composition; is under attack
byexclusionary publicpolicies; and therefore must be recognized publiclyand supported by CCCC as aconference cluster and with featuredsessions."
