[CBW_Exec] CBW 2011 Proposal Rankings & question

Dear Colleagues,

Just in case you missed my suggestions for including everyone, I've
re-posted that information below. While I understand the desire for
selectivity, I want to add to Marcia's support for inclusiveness. I speak
from my recent experiences as BWe co-editor, as immediate past co-chair of
CBW. If Shannon and Kathleen don't mind me speaking for them, I would want
to add that we considered mentoring new colleagues toward publication and
presentation a critical part of our positions as co-editors and co-chairs.

Please know I speak from the phenomenal mentoring I have received (and STILL
receive!) from colleagues in the profession-- and especially from people on
the CBW executive board. People here took a chance on me back in the day--
and their support continues to nurture my work.

There are often invisible reasons for proposals we regard as "weak." Perhaps
our colleagues who rank "low" are busy with teaching duties at schools with
4/4 or higher loads-- and no release time for research, summers included.
Or perhaps our colleagues do adjunct work because full-time work for
teaching Basic Writing is increasingly unavailable. I have found myself in
such circumstances in my career.

Because of these experiences I believe in "lifting as we climb" reaching out
to others as other reached out to us. During difficult economic times,
support for people relatively new to BW seems VITAL to keeping our
organization fresh and vibrant-- and still relevant in changing times.

So with that in mind, please find below my suggestions for an inclusive
program.

Sincerely,

Susan

dismantling of basic writing programs across the nation, how can we build
strategic coalitions with those we already think of as “our relations” and,
perhaps, those we might currently think of as “beautiful enemies”?** *

*The systematic dismantling of basic writing programs across the nation:*

INTRODUCTORY MORNING PRESENTATION: Begin by creating a sense of history—and
the national implications of local history. This presentation establishes
the fact that there IS a problem. Some of us may not be aware that: 1)
there is a problem 2) local issue demonstrate global uncertainties. Consider
what MLK indentified as an interconnected “fabric of mutuality”: “Injustice
anywhere is injustice everywhere.” This presentation will introduce us to a
long-standing BW program at a major research university (Ohio State) that
once actively participated in BW scholarship and pedagogy— and why and how
the climate changed.

*When establishing responses to what appears to be*:

AFTERNOON PRESENTATIONS/ROUNDTABLE/DISCUSSION STARTERS—OUR CHOICE: These
presentations demonstrate individual responses to keeping alive basic
writing research/pedagogy. When we cannot work in coalition (we are adjuncts
at several different schools; we are marginalized by our institutions in any
number of ways) we need to see possibilities for individual work to keep the
work of keeping basic writing present in local and global contexts.
