Hi All,
Called to cancel my hotel rooms this morning, so I won't be coming this year. I've suddenly
realized that retirement and moving to my home in Augusta, GA are only 12 weeks away and
I know that I moved 50 boxes of books to Cincy when I came here. Seems to me that I've
still been buying books, so the thought of packing them and all my other stuff is beyond
intimidating, even with help from my kids and grandkids.
>From now through mid-June is the last term for the Center for Access and Transition, something
that deeply saddens us. I did submit a dossier for tenure and promotion, which was originally turned
down and then approved. It has been a crazy time, with intense pressures on faculty, staff, and
students. Amng other crazy things, I got an email from the Assistant Provost asking me to withdraw
my dossier, so I could serve on the department RPT committee. Then he decided that I could serve
on the committee without withdrawing my dossier. Everyone who was not tenured last year was given
notification of pending termination. But the administration keeps refusing to actually fulfill the terminations,
giving people futile hope that their jobs will be safe. I am so glad that I decided to remain this year
because many of our folks are dealing with issues of depression, anxiety, and fears for the future, and
I'm able to provide a listening ear, and other supports. I'm working with REACH (a support service for
all kinds of issues) to provide support beyond merely listening to folks. The folks in REACH are also being
fired to be replaced by outsourced service providers. They have six months til termination and will be
deeply sensitized to the issues being faced by the CAT folks.
A number of CAT faculty are presenting at 4Cs this year. Please, if you can, attend their presentations,
and if you know of jobs opening up in the next year or so, please encourage them to apply for jobs.
I'm resigning from the exec. committee, so you can replace me with someone who can be more active.
I'd suggest that you tap Aaron Kerley and/or Michelle Holley who will be presenting with Susan. But I
am not resigning from the group, nor from my commitment to basic writing and basic writers. Please
keep me on the mailing list so I can keep track of what you're all up to.
Allan, if you see Tom, be sure to say "Hi" for me.
I will for sure miss you all.
Marcia

Marcia:
Good luck on the big transition. Unfortunately, I won't see Tom because I, too, am not attending. The college has its accreditation visit next week, and I've been very involved in the self-study and the other arrangements. This was not the week to be away from Chicago.
Again, my best wishes to you.
Alan
