Subject: [CBW_Exec] FW: BWe, Special Issue proposal (vote by 3/5/10)

Dear BWe Editorial Board:

On behalf of Barbara Gleason, I put forward the following proposal for a Special Issue of BWe on the topic "multimodal literacies: learning, access, and support among students, instructors, and institutions."

Since it ties in so beautifully with the CBW workshop theme, we'd love to get an approval so Barbara can prepare a CFP to distribute at the CBW 2010 workshop and throughout CCCC.

We've not done a special issue before, so we have no procedure for approval. I'd like to suggest that we go ahead as it sounds like a marvelous idea to us here at A&M-Commerce.

If you can send us your thoughts before March 5th, 2010, that'd be great. If we hear no objections before that date, we'd like to give Barbara the go-ahead so she can begin developing the CFP and conversations at her institution.

--From Barbara Gleason--

I would like to take on the responsibility of editing a special topics issue of BWe on this topic: "multimodal literacies: learning, access and support among students, instructors and institutions." This issue could spin out of the CBW workshop in 2010. CBW members could contribute ideas and also their own manuscripts -- if they want to. The special topics call for papers could be discussed at the CBW EB meeting and announced at the CBW SIG, which I plan to attend. This topic (as stated above) is a rough draft of how the topic might eventually be articulated. I would be more than happy to flesh out and form ideas in collaboration with you and Shannon. The really good news is that I could recruit current graduate students to assist with the editorial process. They would learn a lot and BWe would benefit from their labor. As you know, I served as the managing editor of The Writing Instructor as USC for 2 years. I have lots of experience issuing a call for papers for a special topics issue, manuscript review and selection, and communicating with authors about suggested revisions. I would be able to teach students about these practices and I'd love to work out a plan where you could mentor one or more of our L&L grad students as an "editorial assistant" either on this or a future BWe issue.
