Hi! In response to Hannah's request for up-dates on our activities:
I continue to administer, develop and assess the MA in Language and
Literacy
CCNYhttp://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/humanities/english/graduate_language.cfm.
Lynn Troyka, Jane Maher, Tom Peele, and Kate Garretson have all taught
courses for L&L MA students recently. A few months ago, I wrote and submitted a
self-study report on the L&L MA for Fall 2008/Spring 2009.
This Spring 2010 semester, I am working together with Amy Dalsimer and
Wynne Ferdinand (of the La Guardia Com. College Adult & Continuing Education
program) to pilot an internship for two graduate students to co-teach in GED
classes in the La Guardia Community College's Adult ACE division. Since the L&
L MA's mission is to prepare graduate students to teach adult education,
basic writing, or college composition and literature courses, I am delighted
that two of our L&L grad students (Justin March & Wynne Ferdinand) secured
two full-time teaching jobs within CUNY in the past few months. In addition,
two of our recent graduates (Lauren Ball and John Lyons) have just started
doctoral programs (with fellowships) at NYU and at St. John's U.
This semester, I'm developing a new curriculum for a grad course titled
Adult Learners of Language and Literacy. I'm also teaching an undergrad
sociolinguistics class for 1st time.
For my research on adult undergraduate writers of autobiography in a
prior learning assessment program, I won a Professional Staff Congress-CUNY
research award for this academic year and presented part of my findings at the
National Institute on the Assessment of Adult Learning in Princeton, NJ in J
une '09. Next month, I'll report further on this work at CCCC, where I'll
also chair the SIG on Teaching Adult Learners in Diverse Contexts Friday
night. We'll be focusing on issues related to teaching and learning on-line.
Would love for you to attend!!
Looking forward to seeing you all very soon.
Warmly, Barbara Gleason

End of CBW_Exec Digest, Vol 23, Issue 5
***************************************

I am sorry to be so out of the loop that I haven't been paying attention to the emails: that's part of the personal update information. I continue to be chair of the communications department (English and speech) at Truman College, as well as Director of Assessment for the college. I have spent almost all my time since last May, aside from teaching duties, as one of the authors of our self-study for the accreditation visit by the Higher Learning Commission in March (thus the reason I am not attending the C's this year). I am also now officially the most senior faculty member in the Chicago City Colleges (!), in the midst of my 42nd year. I think I will be giving a go for one more year but am keeping open the option of retiring this year.

My work with assessment, both in the college and in the department, has been extensive in the last year. College-wide, we completed our first reading of the General Education portfolio, encompassing four college-wide goals tied to weighted rubrics, all based on papers from students who had completed at least thirty hours of coursework. The results showed that students (and assignments) fell slightly below expectations in critical thinking (I know that will come a shock to everyone). Thus the feedback loop project required every department to engage in assessment projects for both an entry-level and an upper-level course, targeted toward improving critical thinking. We are extending the portfolio this year to examine the work of students in first-year courses, and next year to the work of developmental courses. The whole activity has been especially useful in tearing down silos within the institution, for the readers of the portfolios involved faculty, support staff and administrators (including the president, vice president, and dean of instruction!).

My department is also engaged in the critical thinking initiative, with a focus on our lower-level developmental reading/writing course and on English 102. Additionally, we have revised our SLO's for all courses and our requirements for the papers to include in the departmental portfolios (for developmental, we now require a reflective introduction, an three-hour exit writing of summary and response, and two papers that must incorporate at least two sources in their arguments, with one of the papers begun in class. We also meet in teams with our 46 adjuncts (compared to 20 full-time faculty members) at the beginning of the term, at mid-term, and in grading sessions on the portfolios at end of term. Mentoring has become a priority.

Off the top of my head, that's what's new.

Alan Meyers
Chair Communication Department and Director of Assessment
Harry S Truman College
Chicago
