[Shannon Carter]

Wow, Marcia! What a year! How exciting to hear about your novels. I¹m so
glad you¹ll be able to spend some time getting them out there in the world
for us to enjoy. (particularly adorable to me is Annie. I can¹t just picture
her now)

You¹ll be missed!

Hi All,

It feels so strange to be writing this to you all, mostly because the
changes that are going to
occur in my life are so completely unexpected. I was sure I was going to go
up for tenure
this coming fall and instead I'll be retiring at the end of December. I'll
be moving to the
state of Georgia, to a suburb of Augusta home of the Masters Golf Tournament
for which
the schools all have the week off. I have no intentions to hang up my hat
and go gently into
that good night, but will switch gears a bit and allow myself to focus on
the multiple novels
I've written in the last couple of years that deserve someone dedicated to
publishing them
instead of trying to get tenured.

Claude and Marion is the story of a couple of lonely aging profs who find
one another
despite their ineptitude for romance in their late fifties.

Annie's Nine Moms started life as "June and Louise," the story of two
sisters who decide to
put their combined wealth into buying and revamping a huge old Victorian
home and inviting
other aging women to join them to make life easier for all of them. One of
the women who
comes to live with them is Annie, a cute old lady with a penchant for
collecting buttons and
Alheimer's that makes her think other people are stealing her buttons.

And Death in the Auditorium is about a really awful prof in an English Dept
who has her
throat slit in the chair room off the auditorium at graduation. She is
everybody's worst
nightmare of a dissertation committee member, so I had a lot of fun with
this one.

I'm hoping that all will work out so I can join you all next year in
Louisville!

Marcia
