Thanks for posting this news. You are truly an inspiration (and with a broken shoulder, no less! I hope you are healing well).

If you would e-mail me your CV (just so I have a list of your accomplishments and get all the details straight), I'd be happy to send a P and T letter on your behalf.

Sincerely,

Kelly

Hi All, and especially Susan,

Susan, I really appreciate your willingness to write a letter in support of the CAT. Your
efforts and the support of the others in the CBW are indeed precious to us as we fight for
survival against mighty powerful odds.

Although Susan read the tea leaves and left UC before the hammer fell, I have chosen to stay and
continue the fight from within instead of retiring. Rather than retiring, I'm going up for tenure and
promotion, not particularly expecting to be granted either, but willing to use this opportunity to
address the colleges and university on a more personal level and to argue that many sophomore,
junior, senior, and grad students have ongoing issues with writing, particularly when they approach
new formats, new expectations, and new documentation rules, but also including some problems
with writing not easily resolved in a few semesters of first year composition classes.

Given the probability that public pressure is unlikely to persuade Perzigian et al to retain the
CAT despite the Ohio state mandates, I am trying to refocus my efforts toward insisting that
struggling writers are often not developmental students at all, but students whose writing challenges
are such that they still need experts who can help them to succeed in writing assignments of many
kinds and at many levels, and that our expertise is also needed in teacher development programs
in the College of Education.

To accomplish these goals, I would invite those of you who feel comfortable doing so to write
letters in support of my efforts to gain promotion and tenure despite the intended closing of the
CAT for the students whose profs will read your letters as my dossier goes through the process
in various committees and administrative levels. I know that letters like yours actually do have a
substantive effect, often far more able to persuade than whatever I might say or do. To place
them in my dossier, I would need for them to reach me by the second week of September.

Letters can be sent in care of Janet Reed Head, Humanities, Media, and Cultural Studies
ML0205 4428 French Hall West University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, OH 45221.

On a side bar more personal level, I fell July 15th and broke my shoulder, so the fact that I
am typing at this point of recovery is only due to a profound determination not to allow the
powers that be to silence me and the others in our departments...determination and some
extra strength tylenol...... ;-) And a lot of spell checking to correct the poor typing.

Thank goodness it happened down in Grovetown, GA so I have had family to help with
the things I haven't been able to do myself. Retirement is still an eventual goal, so I bought
myself a sweet little house down here and have it furnished now and all that jazz.

My contact info for here is 4745 West Creek Mill Court Grovetown, GA 30813, and my
phone number is 706-955-9780 if you have any questions, want more information, or etc.

Marcia Ribble

I didn't know about the CAEL site, Barb. Thanks for the info. The state-by-state info is very useful. I plan to share it with students in my basic writing class in the fall. I want them to know, in dollars and cents, how much it will mean to them to complete college.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for forwarding your excellent letter and the published memo you are
responding to. Great Work!

A state by state analysis of recent stuctural changes in both public and
private colleges would be useful to have ready-to-hand. I'd love to read it if
anyone knows of one.

Council of Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) did something similar and
produced a very rich analysis of state by state educational and workforce
participation for adults. Here is just a sample of a finding reported on: "In
35 states, more than 60 percent of the population does not have an
associate's degree or higher." A major focus of this report is an argument for
encouraging adults to return to college. (I heard from a CAEL official that in
an exchange that took place at a conference, Cliff Adelman disagreed with
some of the data or conclusions.)

Here is a link to a summary of Adult Learning in Focus: National and
State-by-State Data (2008):
http://www.cael.org/adultlearninginfocus.htm
Here is a link to the full report:
http://www.cael.org/pdf/State_Indicators_Monograph.pdf
If you haven't read this already, you might want to check it out. If you
have read it, I'd like to know what you think. Maybe in an off-line response
to avoid flooding people's emails?

Warm regards to you all, Barbara Gleason
