Susan, et al,

I'd suggest that we contact Karen Uehling, Terry Collins, Peter Adams, and some of the other

folks who were part of the organizing group for the workshop in the past. From memory I do not

recall any workshop that had as many presenters as we did this year. The majority of the workshops

had one or two people in the morning and one or two people in the afternoon doing the presenting,

and the board not considered presenters, but facilitators or discussion leaders, and often not even

that formal a role in the workshops of years past. I've attended every year from 96 til now, so that means a

lot of years before that when I wasn't there. But it seems to me that almost all of the folks on the board

depended pretty heavily on doing presentation in regular sessions to obtain funding from their institutions.

At least that's the model I've learned from them. That said, however, it seemed like the individual sessions

this year were often well attended by people who weren't doing the presentations. I'm wondering if they didn't

register for the workshop and attended it anyway. I know that Ronna had two full tables (at least 15 people for

just her presentations in the morning), and the same was true of Eileen Feretti. Seems to me that we had 50 or more

people in attendance in the morning. Did anyone count? Take attendance? Maybe we should. Did

they in the past? I don't remember anyone doing that.

Marcia

Dear CBW Colleagues,

Below please find an email from Chuck Bazerman about the CBW workshop.
I think his chief concern is that the workshop speakers listed in the
program were the majority of our attendees-- and not outside
registrants/attendees. So with this in mind, would you assist me with
the questions that follow his message:

Please forward to Kathleen, as I cannot find her email.

Kathleen and Susan,

I am writing as 2008 CCCC program chair to get a bit of background
information on your Basic Writing workshop and to let you know that
we will be reviewing workshop proposals under criteria that would
ensure they are indeed workshops led by a few people and attended by
larger numbers.

Was this workshop a one time affair that occurred in New York, or is
it the expression of an ongoing community? For how many years? If it
is ongoing and you are anticipating putting in for the 2008
convention, how large was your registered participation separate from
the announced members of the panel?

If you you do indeed represent an ongoing group that use this
occasion more as an opportunity to gather together and are not a real
workshop, perhaps we could explore other solutions to meet the needs
of the group. So plase tell me more and feel free to ask questions.

best,
Chuck

Here are the questions that I have for you all:

--How many attendees did we have at the workshop? Is there a
breakdown somewhere of how many attendees were listed on the program--
and how many were outside registrants? Would Eileen Maley have this
information?

--What year did CBW begin having workshops at CCCC? I'm thinking
1995, but am not sure.

I am already in the process of drafting a message that describes next
year's event and the need for a morning and an afternoon workshop. The
morning workshop will focus on NOLA and will be given by Greater NOLA
Writing Project community members, continuing our focus on local basic
writing communities. The afternoon workshop will continue our focus
on basic writing strategies from cutting edge programs at the CUNY
schools (Kingsborough 2007; LaGuardia 2006)-- this time from Mark
McBeth and his group at John Jay, the 2007 Inny winners.

I'll speak with Ken Rayes from the Greater NOLA Writing Project early
next week and Kathleen and I will be in touch with Mark McBeth before
the end of next week.

Whatever information, suggestions, questions, comments, or concerns
that you can provide would be of great assistance!

Thanks and best,

Susan
