The list may not like the attachment I just sent of the minutes, so I'm copying
them here, which obviously will not be great in terms of formatting. Hopefully
the attached version will arrive to you all soon, since it will be much easier
to read.

Please read the minutes with care, and
please send me corrections, especially to the "actions/tasks" which you will
find under each agenda item.

Once we've approved these, especially the work we've agreed to do in the coming
months, then we'll attack the bylaws and our social
justice policy statement, and very soon, the precon submission and SIG
submission.

Thank you all for the excellent discussion of issues and possibilities thus
far, and thank you, Shannon, for creating this vehicle for ease of
communication. kb

•	Additions/Changes to Agenda
Karen (guest) asked that we consider posting CBW-L survey results, book
suggestions, etc. on COMP FAQ, and that credit for BW courses be supported by
CBW.

Actions/Tasks: This item was discussed under BWe and the social justice
policy; see below.

Greg asked that we consider an award for Bedford St. Martin’s at next year’s
SIG.

Actions/Tasks: Board agreed to discuss this further and plan it for 2008.

Bill suggested highlighting scholarly work, possibly through a CBW “exemplar
award.”

Actions/Tasks: Was there an action plan?

Alan suggested that we encourage roundtable format, with choice of subjects,
for next year’s precon

Actions/Tasks: This was discussed under the precon, and it will be mentioned
to the presenters as a successful workshop format, but will not be required.

•	Board Issues
o	Membership - Susan and Kathleen brought up issues of new members on the
board and increasing our diversity, and the by-laws issue of nonparticipating
members. There was discussion of an email to CC’s soliciting CBW membership,
and TYCA and WPA, and question of having a CBW person/officer in charge of
recruiting/membership. Can there be a link on BWe to membership? Can BWe
include a list of coming events, or could that be a monthly posting on the CBW
list-serv? Discussion of reaching out to possible board members with potential
funding.

Actions/Tasks: Shannon offered to set up a listserv for the CBW board to
facilitate discussion and ease of communication. Kathleen offered to post
board minutes and updated contact info on it. Peter will be ready to approach
Bedford St. Martin and possibly other publishers to sponsor people to come to
CCCC, after further discussion by the board.

o	Board Bylaws – Kathleen outlined reasons for changing the by-laws and
the major changes, including selecting co-chairs in advance, adding position of
past-chairs, and new board duties.

Actions/Tasks: The board approved the by-laws in general and will work on
wording and additional changes in the coming months, via the board listserv.

o	Budget – Greg announced that there is $1,937 in the account.

•	Awards
o	Innovation Award – Greg announced that this year’s two awardees will
speak at the SIG, and that we need a board member to serve on the committee
with Greg and Linda Adler-Kassner; Susanmarie Harrington is going off the
committee.

Actions/Tasks: Sugie will join Greg on the selection committee for the Inny
for 2008.

o	Fellowship – Shannon seconded Susan’s suggestion that the committee do
online coaching/mentoring to improve the quality of the applications. There
was discussion of revising the criteria/procedures.

Actions/Tasks: Shannon will continue to chair this committee, and Hannah,
Barbara, Alan, Peter, and Sarah will also serve, revising materials as needed
and reviewing applications and mentoring/providing online coaching.

•	BWe – Susan had a handout calling for submissions for the Fall 2007
issue. Discussion of the differences between BWe and JBW. All board members
will be reviewers (see bylaws) and they will be blind reviews. Formatting
and “housing” issues will be handled by Shannon and Greg. Hannah had a
handout with current and possible links to BWe. Discuss of how to best make
information on basic writing accessible. Could there be a discussion of
assignments and syllabi in BWe? Would that be a good place for that?

Actions/Tasks: Hannah and Greg will work on links to BWe through JBW (as
outlined in Hannah’s handout). Hannah will work on links to BWe through the
Basic Writing Portal and ERIC. Shannon will add an entry for BWe in
Wikipedia. Who???? was going to put BWe info on CompFAQ? Susan will ask, on
the CBW board listserv, for interests/expertise of board members. BWe will
follow CCC guidelines for student submissions (articles with student work).

•	Basic Writing social justice policy – Susan presented a handout with
the draft of a Basic Writing and Social Justice Policy. Lengthy and animated
discussion followed: should we do a survey on CBW-L about the state of BW in
each state, what are state laws on BW, how is financial aid affected by BW
coursework, is BW coursework counted as a credit, elective or toward
graduation, PELL grants, TANF, should Alan come up with a list of questions to
be sent to Susan and eventually to go on the CBW-L, would we agree to this
statement “No institution of higher education shall charge for any course for
which graduation credit is not awarded,” what are students rights to their own
language, could Lynn Troyka’s grad students gather data, should we propose the
position statement on Susan’s handout or some version of it.

Actions/Tasks: Board will further discuss this issue via the newly created CBW
exec listserv, and all agreed that this is of vital importance. Bill will
speak to Juanita ????? Barbara will talk with Lynn Troyka.

•	CCCC 2008 New Orleans
o	Discussion of Thursday or Friday requests for CBW SIG – Barbara has a
conflict with the Thurdsay SIG; Susan worries that many people will not have
funding to stay through Friday so suggests a Thursday SIG.

Actions/Tasks: Kathleen will request more discussion from the board on when to
request the CBW SIG and will apply for Thursday or Friday based on the outcome.

o	Susan said that the two Inny 2007 award winners have been asked by Greg
about presenting for the CBW Preconference, and one for sure wants to, and the
other one hopes to be able to. She has also contacted the New Orleans Writing
Project people, and there is initial interest in presenting.

Actions/Tasks: Susan and Kathleen will continue the contact and will apply for
the CBW Preconference 2008.

•	SIG 2007 agenda - Susan and Kathleen said that Greg will present the
Innovation Awards and Shannon will present the Fellowship; each awardee will
give a brief presentation. We will also brainstorm possibilities for proposal
topics for CCCC 2008 and encourage more BW proposals, and there will be info on
submitting BWe articles and on the CBW-L.
