Hi Everyone,
We're getting close to Austin on Friday so I wanted to give you some reminders:
Most importantly, be outside of Henderson Building at Commerce by 4:20 a.m., and the Mesquite Metroplex at 4:50 a.m. (if you are standing on Towne Crossing, looking at the building, we meet near the doors farthest to the right side). Please note that the building will be locked so plan accordingly.
If driving a private car, the event starts at The University of Texas at Austin LBJ Auditorium, 2313 Red River. There is public parking nearby as it is attached to the LBJ Presidential Library. Once you get inside the auditorium, they will have a section reserved for TAMUC.
Dr. Mercado-Sierra will bring the t-shirts with her so that anyone who has not picked up theirs yet can get it on the bus.
You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks for the bus ride; there is a restroom on the bus. Also, bring some money for lunch and any incidentals. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes because we will have a long walk from the auditorium to the Capitol. You do have to go through security to enter the Capitol so leave any guns, knives, etc., at home.

TIME TBA
I'm in the process of scheduling a brief meeting with Rep. Justin Holland's office; all of you are welcome to attend. Yes, I know his political affiliation, but advocacy requires social workers to approach all political affiliations. It's easy to talk to the people who already agree with us, it's an art to create respectful dialogue with those who don't always agree with us about the issues. You are also welcome to schedule your own appointment with your representative during the afternoon.
2:30 PM LOAD BUS AND DEPART
We will meet on the Southeastern side of the Capitol where the bus pick-up/drop-off is to load the bus. We usually make a stop at the outskirts of Austin where there are a few fast-food places to pick up a late lunch/snack. Depending on traffic, we will arrive back at Mesquite at approximately 6:30 p.m., and then Commerce at 7:15
p.m. Again, return times are dependent upon traffic.
My phone number is 972-989-2799. Feel free to call me with questions or concerns before and during the event.
Looking forward to it!

Attached are the registration and travel conduct forms for the Social Work Advocacy Day in Austin. Both forms and the $10.00 payment are due by February 24, 2023. You can turn it in at the School of Social Work Office in Commerce or at the Mesquite Metroplex location (Sheryl Bohrer). T-shirts are optional but we ask that you wear Lion colors as there is usually a spirit competition amongst the universities.
You may take the bus or your private car. There is a limit of 54 seats on the bus so turn in your registration early to be assured a spot. For Commerce pick-up, you need to be outside Henderson by 3:45 a.m. For Mesquite pick-up, be outside the Metroplex by 4:15 a.m. The bus cannot wait for people who are late.
Breakfast is included when we get to Austin but you may also bring snacks for the bus ride. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring money for a late lunch and incidentals. We usually stop for lunch on the way back. We arrive back around 6:30 p.m. or later depending on traffic.
You are also eligible to apply for the Andrew Marks Student Advocacy Award. It has a different due date. Details are here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfOSP3nYqYx0R77yaq23Xw-1SLMmQwCLX6NdJBHOAN5zDmZNQ/viewform
If you have any questions, you can email me at dawn.nelson at tamuc.edu or text 972-989-2799.
