Deans Council,
The library will be offering a writing assistance center beginning right
after Spring Break. We will be hiring two tutors, and the Writing Center
will train them for us. Our plan is to offer this new service to students
from 6-10 pm, Sunday through Thursday nights, and 1-4 pm Saturday
afternoons. This will fill a need for assistance during evenings and
weekends that the main writing center on campus cannot provide. It is also
a popular service for academic libraries to offer on many campuses, because
of the natural link between the research and writing process.
We also plan to offer graduate students periodic opportunities to gather in
the library writing center and practice giving their papers for conferences.
These sessions would be facilitated by a staff member with extensive writing
center experience, and graduate faculty would be invited as well. The
advantages offered by these sessions are that it would help the students
improve their papers, and boost their confidence by doing a trial run of
their delivery in a friendly environment.
We will evaluate the program at the end of the semester to see if it proves
worthwhile to continue next year.
A publicity campaign will be launched preceding the actual opening of the
new service. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions
for us as we prepare to implement this new service.
Thanks,
Greg Mitchell, Director
James Gee Library
