Subject: [Faculty & Staff] Help for hurricane victims
We realize that many of you are wanting to help the hurricane victims in
anyway possible; however, you may not know who to contact or what to
do. Therefore, we would like to pass along information as we receive it
concerning efforts taking place within the community and the university
campus. The following information is provided to help as you so generously
give to those in need.
There are currently around 50 or more victims staying at the Holiday Inn
Express Hotel. These people are basically in need of everything -
including: clothing, money, pillows and blankets. The Commerce Bargain Box
is trying to help furnish clothing. Also, the university sent t-shirts to
them. If you have anything to donate then please take it to the First
United Methodist Church and they will disseminate it to the victims.
The Commerce Ministerial Alliance and the Salvation Army, along with the
First United Methodist Church, United Way and Rotary, are taking donations
to help defray the cost of the hotel rooms for the victims; as well as,
other donations. The hotel is helping with discounted rates, but donations
are really needed so these individuals will not have to pay anything for
their rooms. You can donate to this cause by calling 903-886-3220. These
donations will go to help the local victims.
Some of the local restaurants and organizations are furnishing meals to the
victims at the hotel. Lunch was provided by Dominoes Pizza today,
breakfast will be provided by McDonald's tomorrow and Friday and the Lions
Club will be furnishing lunch tomorrow with Lone Star Pizza Works. Sue
Porter is coordinating the food relief efforts and you can contact her at
903-886-8933 or 903-456-4124.
The Holiday Inn Express manager said they could really use some help and
would appreciate any fraternity, sorority or other student organizations
that could provide some much needed help. Please go up there or call
903-886-4777.
There is a local family leaving tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 1) for Beloxi to
help some family members. They would like to take donations for other
victims and they are asking for flashlights and batteries, hurricane
lanterns (oil lanterns), oil for the lanterns, water and other
non-perishable items. You can donate these items by taking them to 1504
Bonham Street, or calling 903-886-8176, or email Bill Brooks at
brookswc at koyote.com.
The A&M-C student body president, Cameron Reynolds, is leading an effort to
get student groups to help with some of the efforts.
Derald Harp's horticulture club is trying to get approval to mow/trim yards
for $50 donations to go to the Red Cross.
Chef Diane Shannon with Sodexho said that she can personally host a family
to stay with her. Contact her at 903-468-4890 if you know of a family
needing a place to stay.
Also, there have been several other staff and faculty members mention that
they are willing to offer accommodations. If they will send me their
contact information, then I will get it out to everybody.
Rick Miller is trying to get some efforts coordinated to help the
victims. You can call Rick at 903-468-3087 if you want to work with him on
his efforts.
I hope this information is helpful and will provide you a means to give to
the victims. Please contact the organizations at the numbers listed in
this emails in order to help. If you have any questions then please feel
free to call or email me.
Thanks,
Penny A. Belcher, Director
Corporate and Community Relations
Texas A&M University-Commerce
