Hello Educators,
We hope your school year has been fantastic so far!
Here at Texas A&M University-Commerce, we are gearing up for our annual fall Art Day on November 11, 2023! Each fall, we offer art workshops to share our knowledge and provide opportunities for students to explore a range of art practices. It is a wonderful time to make some art and learn about our programs! All workshops are offered free of charge—just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity!
Students spend a Saturday on our campus working with our dedicated faculty during our Art Day event. Participants can arrive at 9:30 am for light refreshments in our Main Art Building at the University Gallery. Our morning workshops run from 10 am - 12 pm, followed by lunch (provided by the department), and our afternoon workshops run from 1 - 3 pm.
Our morning workshops 10am - 12pm:
Cyanotype Workshop: This workshop will teach you the basics of the cyanotype process, using the sun as our UV light source. The focus is on creating cyanotypes with paper and found objects, and simple film positives and negatives. All materials will be provided.
Raku Ceramics Workshop: Learn the traditional Japanese method of firing called Raku. Each participant will be given a ceramic plate to decorate with glaze and then will participate in firing their piece. Wear long pants, closed-toed shoes and bring a long-sleeved work shirt. Bisque ware, brushes, and glazes will be provided. Ages 12 and above.
Twist and Shout, Bookmaking workshop: Learn how to make a spiral-bound sketchbook. In this workshop, participants will create each aspect of a spiral-bound sketchbook, including cutting paper to size, fashioning covers, and making the coil binding. All materials and tools will be provided.
Our afternoon workshops 1pm - 3 pm:
Letterpress: Discover the art of letterpress printing and its rich history and craftsmanship. This hands-on session will empower students with the skills to create unique, tactile, and visually stunning posters. Explore the magic of ink, type, and paper in a creative environment that fosters artistic expression.
Meaning Making, Creative Explorations in the Gallery: Have you ever walked into a gallery or a museum and considered the ways in which you might respond to works of art creatively and meaningfully by engaging your own stories and experiences? In this workshop, you are invited to consider the ways to engage with works of art by writing narratives, poetry or by creating your very own aesthetic response with different art media. All materials provided.
Cold Cast Bronze Clothespins: Participants learn to use rubber molds, resin, pigments and real, ground, bronze powder to create bronze, "cold cast" clothespins. This technique is an alternative to using traditional foundry methods for making cast, metal sculptures. All materials will be provided.
