In keeping with his MFA thesis research on recycling and sustainability, Rick Gavos (MFA ’12) posed a question to
David Schechter of WFAA’s “Verify” series. Once selected
what followed was a roadtrip to see if Zero Waste is possible.



You might ask yourself what is Zero Waste? Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages
the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused as opposed to ending up
in a landfill.

After Rick shot and produced a 60-second introductory video posing his Zero Waste question, the topic was approved and a Verify Roadtrip ensued. The veteran reporter, crew, and Mr. Gavos visited the McCommas landfill, the City of Dallas recycling center, and the Zero Waste offices. Experts that were interviewed included Kelly High, Director of Sanitation for Dallas, and Dr. Sahadat Hossain, Director of the Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability at the University of Texas Arlington.


“This experience proved to be an insightful exploration of the bigger picture of recycling and Zero Waste. My thesis topic examined the designer’s role in sustainability. This roadtrip took it to the next level focusing on our role as a citizen of the world and the part we all play in the sustainability of our planet,” said Mr. Gavos.


The 6.5-minute Verify segment first ran on WFAA Channel 8 during the 10:00 p.m. newscast on September 8, 2017, and again at different times that weekend during subsequent newscasts. It was also distributed to other TEGNA (WFAA’s owner) stations throughout Texas and nationally.
